Once seen by many outside Japan as a niche form of animation, anime has become a major force in global screen culture, inspiring passionate fan communities and reshaping mainstream entertainment. Anime reaches its ever-expanding audiences through streaming platforms, social media, movie theaters, conventions and fan networks.

This Museum of the Moving Image screening program highlights the rise of anime through acclaimed series from the past decade. Individual episodes from series recognized by the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, spanning 2016 through 2026, are on view for two-week periods.

Together, the selections reflect the range of contemporary anime: intimate character drama, fantasy, action, romance, science fiction, and formally inventive storytelling. They offer a snapshot of anime’s growing international presence and cultural influence.

Included in the screening series are episodes from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019), Attack on Titan (2013), Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (2020), Vinland Saga (2019), Violet Evergarden (2018), The Ancient Magus’ Bride (2017) and Mob Psycho 100 (2016).
