MoMI presents an exhibition of material related to Jane Schoenbrun’s horror film Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. In this exploration of the slasher film genre, a queer filmmaker (Hannah Einbinder) is tasked with resurrecting a 1980s-era horror franchise about supernatural murders at a sleepaway camp, and seeks out the film’s original, reclusive “final girl” (Gillian Anderson) for inspiration.
The Museum of the Moving Image’s installation pairs screen-used props from the fictional Camp Miasma franchise, including VHS tapes, posters, merchandise, and a costume, with a series of movie posters selected by Schoenbrun, which include Psycho (1960), Sleepaway Camp (1983), and Dressed to Kill (1980). The posters, with descriptive text by filmmaker, illuminate the sources she drew upon, each of which contribute to the genre’s complex representation of gender, desire and sexual deviance.
Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma stars Jane Schoenbrun, Gillian Anderson, Hannah Einbinder, Jack Haven, Patrick Fischler, Jess McLeod, Zach Cherry, Dylan Baker, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Quintessa Swindell, Amanda Fix, Eva Victor, Sarah Sherman, Kevin McDonald, Ryan McEwen, Arthur Conti, Hunter Dillon, Aren Buchholz, Louise Weard, William Vaughan, Trevor Addie, Jordana Summer, Willy McGee, Cassandra Ebner, Florence Barrett and Nikki Bryce.
The exhibition opened July 30, 2026, ahead of the film’s theatrical release on August 7th of the same year. It is on view on the Museum’s ground floor Founders Hall featuring approximately 35 objects, through November 8, 2026.
