On March 15, 1957, the horror sci-fi B-movie Voodoo Woman was released in movie theaters. Samuel Z. Arkoff’s American International Pictures (AIP) released Voodoo Woman as a double-feature with the Roger Corman-directed fantasy horror The Undead, which starred Pamela Duncan, Richard Garland and Allison Hayes.

Voodoo Woman takes place deep in the jungle, where a mad scientist named Dr. Roland Gerard (Tom Conway) is using the natives’ voodoo magic for his own experiments, in order to create an indestructible being to serve his will. When a party of gold seekers stumbles upon his village, the scientist realizes that Marilyn Blanchard (Marla English), the expedition’s evil leader, is the perfect subject for his work.

Directed by Edward L. Cahn from a script by Russ Bender & V.I. Voss, Voodoo Woman is executive produced by Samuel Z. Arkoff & James H. Nicholson, with a cast that also includes Mike Connors, Lance Fuller, Mary Ellen Kay, Paul Dubov, Martin Wilkins, Otis Greene, Norman Willis, Emmett Smith, Paul Blaisdell, Giselle D’Arc and Jean Davis.

The movie’s premise and low budget production value is the type of project AIP was known for during the era. An example of this is the fact that Voodoo Woman features the same monster costume from the 1956 movie The She-Creature, but stripped of its tail, fins and pincer-like claws, with a modified skull mask topped with a blonde wig.

The film is widely regarded as one of the worst films in cinema history, however just nine years later in 1966, it was remade by Larry Buchanan into a TV movie titled Curse of the Swamp Creature that is considered even worse. Voodoo Woman also turned out to be Marla English’s final released movie. The actress married Allen Paul Sutherland in August of 1956, just eight months prior to Voodoo Woman’s release, with whom she went on to have five children with.
