Beginning Friday, October 2nd, 2026, The Metrograph in Downtown New York City spotlights the work of composer and founding member of the psych-pop band Leenalchi, Jang Young-Gyu. The series features screenings of six seminal South Korean movies scored by the artist, including The Foul King (2000), Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), A Bittersweet Life (2005), The Yellow Sea (2010), The Wailing (2016), and Train to Busan (2016). As a founding member of Leenalchi and the groundbreaking Korean act SsingSsing, Jang has long been sought out as collaborator by artists placed at the vanguards of South Korean dance, theater, the visual arts, and cinema. He has found himself in constant demand after his breakthrough work on Park Chan-wook’s Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.
Jang Young-Gyu, in a rare North American appearance, makes an in-person introduction of the October 3rd, 2026 screening of The Wailing, along with an introduction by Leenalchi and a post-screening Q&A with Jang for Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, moderated by Goran Topalovic of Subway Cinema, also on October 3rd, 2026. Jang is also on tour with Leenalchi during this period, performing with Geese in Forest Hills, New York on October 2nd, 2026 and at Pioneer Works art gallery in Red Hook, Brooklyn on October 29th, 2026.
Leenalchi is a South Korean pansori pop band formed in 2019. The band has a unique lineup, with two female and two male traditional Korean singers, two bassists and a drummer. Jang Young Gyu, who previously played bass for SsingSsing, is the bassist for the band. Fellow bassist Jeong Jung-yeop previously played bass for Kiha and the Faces. Drummer Lee Chul-hee was also drummer for SsingSsing. The band is named after Lee Nal-chi, a pansori master and jultagi performer of the 1880s.
The band’s first album was influenced by the pansori play Sugungga. They released one of its tracks, “Tiger is Coming,” as a non-fungible token. Leenalchi were later featured in the 2022 Netflix documentary mini-series Midnight Asia: Eat. Dance. Dream., performing in an episode about Seoul’s nightlife.
In 2026, the band signed with US label Luaka Bop, and in June 2026 released a 6-song EP, Here Comes That Crow, in the U.S. and Canada.
