The first movie theater in the United States to use the ScreenX film format was CGV Cinemas in Los Angeles, which officially debuted the technology on January 1, 2016. The inaugural film screened in the immersive 270-degree panoramic format was The Himalayas, a biographical South Korean drama that had previously been a South Korean box office hit. This marked the U.S. premiere of ScreenX, a multi-projection system developed by CJ 4DPLEX that extends film presentations onto the left and right walls of the theater, creating an immersive viewing experience.

ScreenX is a panoramic film format that presents movies with expanded, dual-sided, 270-degree screens projected on the walls in a theater. First introduced in 2012, it is Co-developed by CJ 4DPLEX, a subsidiary of the CJ CGV group, and KAIST. The firms also created the 4DX motion-theater technology, known as Ultra 4DX.

Based on actual events, The Himalayas tells the story of renowned mountaineer UM Hong-gil, who sets out on a mission to Mount Everest to retrieve his late junior climber’s body, facing the greatest challenge of his life in the process. Directed by Seok-hoon Lee, The Himalayas stars Hwang Jung-min, Jung Woo and Jo Sung-ha.
