Marking a milestone for film history, three Universal Horror classics from 1931 enter the United States public domain on January 1, 2027. On that date, Frankenstein, directed by James Whale, Dracula, directed by Tod Browning, and the concurrent Spanish-language production Drácula, become freely available for adaptation, remixing, and reuse after nearly a century under copyright protection. The transition centers on the standard 95-year term for works published in 1931 that were properly renewed, opening possibilities for filmmakers, artists, educators, and fans, while preserving the cultural impact of these early sound-era masterpieces.

The releases marked the birth of the Universal Monsters franchise during the early years of talking pictures. Universal Pictures, under the leadership of Carl Laemmle Jr., recognized the commercial potential of gothic horror adapted from public-domain literature and successful stage plays.

Released on February 14, 1931, Dracula was adapted from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel via a Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston stage play. Bela Lugosi, who had already portrayed the count on Broadway, also played the Count on screen. The production proved a major financial success for Universal, validating the studio’s move toward horror. Dracula also starred Helen Chandler, David Manners, Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan, Herbert Bunston, Frances Dade, Joan Standing and Charles K. Gerrard.

Filmed simultaneously on the same sets was the Spanish-language Drácula, directed by George Melford. The film was made at a time when Hollywood studios produced many versions of large productions in different languages to serve international markets prior to the widespread use of dubbing technology. A separate cast and crew worked nights after the English-language unit finished for the day. Carlos Villarías portrayed the count, with Mexican actress Lupita Tovar as the primary female lead. The cast also included Barry Norton, Pablo Álvarez Rubio, Eduardo Arozamena, José Soriano Viosca, Carmen Guerrero, Amelia Senisterra and Manuel Arbó. After being distributed in Cuba, Spain and Mexico, Drácula was released in the U.S. on April 24, 1931.

On November 21, 1931, Universal followed with Frankenstein, based on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel. After early development involving other talent, British director James Whale took the helm. Whale cast Boris Karloff as the creature after spotting him on the Universal lot. Makeup artist Jack Pierce crafted the monster’s now-iconic appearance: a flattened head suggesting surgical assembly, neck bolts, heavy brow ridges, and lumbering physicality. The film also starred Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, John Boles, Boris Karloff, Edward Van Sloan, Frederick Kerr, Dwight Frye, Lionel Belmore and Marilyn Harris.
