On Saturday, October 17, 2026, the nonprofit Saturn Video hosts its official grand opening during the 16th annual International Independent Video Store Day. The opening of Saturn Video marks the return of video rental culture to the city as its only video rental storefront. The location in the Minneapolis neighborhood of Seward comes after three years running pop-ups at local markets and theaters. Store owner Sierra Parham built the opening collection to more than 600 titles, including rare copies purchased from the shuttered Video Universe, which ran the last permanent video rental store before closing its Robbinsdale location in 2023.
According to reports, the Video Universe shutdown was driven in part by a lack of new physical media. That closure ended nearly 40 years of Video Universe serving as the area’s final video rental storefront, with the owner retiring and unable to find a buyer for the shop.
The Saturn Video grand opening event runs from 2-8PM and includes a sidewalk sale.
