Marvel Character American Eagle Makes His First Appearance in Marvel Two-in-One Annual #6, Teamed with Thing and Wyatt Wingfoot

First Appearances | Oct 1, 1981

Marvel Comics

Doug Moench and Ron Wilson created the Marvel Comics character Jason Strongbow, better known as American Eagle, for Marvel Two-in-One Annual #6, published in September of 1981. Eagle is described as a member of the Navajo Nation in Arizona, who in his initial appearance is trying to stop a mining company from evacuating a sacred mountain. During this attempt, he discovers a plot by the villain Klaw.

During an ensuing fight with Klaw, Strongbow is hit by Klaw’s sonic blaster, which combines with uranium to give him enhanced physical abilities. Inspired by the flying eagle, Strongbow takes up the mantle of American Eagle. American Eagle possess superhuman strength, speed, agility, stamina, and sturdiness, along with enhanced senses. Additionally, the hero carries a crossbow that fires special bolts.

Using his newfound powers, American Eagle teams up with Ka-Zar, Thing, and Wyatt Wingfoot to defeat Klaw and his minions. Following the defeat of Klaw, American Eagle retuns home as a champion of the Navajo Nation. He was among the heroes gathered to take part in the Contest of Champions and later helps Rom the Spaceknight in his fight against the Dire Wraiths.

After the events of the 2006 Civil War comics storyline, American Eagle debuts an updated costume without the stereotypical Native American attributes of the character’s original introduction.

American Eagle possesses superhuman strength, enabling him to lift approximately 15 tons under optimal conditions. He also possesses superhuman speed, agility, stamina, and sturdiness as a result of a radiation-induced mutation. Strongbow’s bodily tissues are harder and more resistant to physical injury than that of ordinary human beings. However, he is not invulnerable. Eagle can be injured by weapons composed of conventional materials, but he can withstand impact forces that would severely injure or kill a normal person with little to no injuries. Additionally, he can run at a speed of 65 miles per hour for approximately 5 hours before tiring to an appreciable degree.
