Infernal Affairs emerged during a slump for Hong Kong cinema in the early 2000s. It won audience acclaim for its tight plot and innovative narrative style, grossing HK$55 million to become the region’s highest grossing film and marking a creative peak for the Hong Kong film industry. The movie has been remade multiple times both domestically and abroad, most notably, Martin Scorsese’s 2006 American remake, The Departed, which won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Television adaptations were also produced in both China and Japan.
Andrew Lau’s Infernal Affairs stands as a central example of the flawless integration of visuals and music. Complementing the tight narrative, every musical note aligns with the unfolding plot, stirring the audience’s emotions, building tension, and heightening the dramatic impact. The opening drug deal sequence acts as a demonstration of the clash between good and evil. Beyond the plot and visuals, music plays a pivotal role in key scenes. An example of this is the scene where Superintendent Wong falls to his death, the ethereal humming of Fiona Fung’s “Goodbye – Police” serves as a haunting lament for his passing.
Co-directed by Wai Keung Lau (as Andrew Lau) and Alan Mak, the Infernal Affairs trilogy of films stars Andy Lau, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Anthony Chau-Sang Wong, Eric Tsang, Kelly Chen, Sammi Cheng, Edison Chen, Shawn Yue, Elva Hsiao, Chapman To, Ka-Tung Lam, Berg Ting-Yip Ng, Dion Lam, Carina Lau, Francis Ng, Jun Hu, Tung Cho ‘Joe’ Cheung, Henry Fong, Peter Ngor Chi-Kwan, Arthur Wong, Teddy Chan, Leon Lai, Daoming Chen, Sammi Cheng, Waise Lee, Zhizhong Huang, Chi-Keung Wan, Yeung-Ming Wan and Eddie Li.
In the original Infernal Affairs, policeman Chen Wing Yan successfully infiltrates a gang while triad member Lau Kin Ming becomes a mole in the police force. However, things become desperate when each man must seek each other out for their respective bosses, leading to devastating consequences.
Infernal Affairs II is a prequel to the original film. In the movie Chan Wing Yan has just become an undercover officer in the triads while criminal Lau Kin Ming joins the police force. Both the triads and the police find an enemy in a rival crime boss.
Part three takes place months after the events of the original film, with Ming suspicious that a police superintendent is a new mole for the triads. Infernal Affairs III also features flashbacks to officer Yan embarking on his first mission.
