First Ever Web Site Built at CERN Research

Milestones | Aug 6, 1991

CERN

The first ever web site built was at CERN, a European research organization within the border of France. It contained information written by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and other internet pioneers. The URL was info.cern.ch, and this was the address of the world’s first-ever web site and web server, running on a NeXT computer at CERN. The first web page address was http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html, which contained information regarding the WWW project. Visitors could find out more about hypertext, technical details for creating their own webpage, and even an explanation on how to search the Web for information.
