The Legend of Lizzie Borden

Television/Streaming Premiere | Feb 10, 1975

ABC Television, Paramount Television

Historical mystery thriller The Legend of Lizzie Borden was an early made-for-television movie. The film was directed by Paul Wendkos and starred Elizabeth Montgomery — in an Emmy-nominated performance — as Lizzie Borden, an American woman who was accused of murdering her father and stepmother in 1892. The movie co-stars Fionnula Flanagan, Ed Flanders, Katherine Helmond, Don Porter, Fritz Weaver, Bonnie Bartlett, John Beal, Helen Craig, Alan Hewitt, Gail Kobe, Amzie Strickland, Robert Symonds and Hayden Rorke. The Legend of Lizzie Borden premiered on ABC on February 10, 1975 and went on to be nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture Made for Television in 1976.

Elizabeth Montgomery has stated that she purposely choose the role of Lizzie Borden to help shed the stigma attached to playing Samantha Stephens in Bewitched, the role she is most remembered for.
