An Interactive Self-Guided Experience at The House of Hip-Hop Art Gallery curated by The National Hip-Hop Museum.

The World’s 1st Hip-Hop Museum delves deep into the vibrant history of this influential genre, the museum has carefully curated a remarkable collection of artifacts, spanning the golden era from 1979 to 2000, for an extraordinary retrospective gallery show.

Nestled conveniently next to the entrance of Howard University, this retrospective exhibit offers visitors a glimpse into the diverse and captivating world of hip-hop culture. The showcase highlights some of the most fascinating pieces from the museum’s extensive collection, transporting guests through the years when hip-hop was experiencing explosive growth and becoming a global phenomenon.

The “History of Hip-Hop Toys 1977-present” serves as an engaging starting point, revealing how hip-hop has not only influenced music but permeated every aspect of popular culture, including toys and collectibles. From action figures of iconic rappers to toy instruments, the exhibit encapsulates the playful spirit and enduring influence of hip-hop on generations of fans and artists alike.

Among the prized artifacts on display, visitors can marvel at the legendary Rakim’s Gucci Dapper Dan Jacket, an emblem of the genre’s early fashion fusion that continues to inspire contemporary streetwear trends. Nearby, Dr. Dre’s Fugee’s RIAA Gold Plaque shines as a testament to the groundbreaking success of one of hip-hop’s most influential producers, commemorating the cultural impact of his music.

The exhibit further explores the musical roots of hip-hop with the iconic DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince Boombox, transporting guests to the era when boomboxes served as the auditory gateway to the world of hip-hop. Also, Death Row Records Electric Chair is a symbol of the label’s impact on the genre.

Enthroned in the gallery are replicas of Notorious B.I.G.’s infamous chair and crown, accompanied by stage-worn jackets that once graced the backs of legendary hip-hop performers. These artifacts give visitors an intimate connection to the artists, their stage presence, and their influence on the culture.

At the heart of the exhibit stands the impressive 12ft Boombox, an immersive installation that invites visitors to experience the full force of hip-hop’s signature beats and messages. Its towering presence pays tribute to the genre’s impact on not just music but the visual and architectural landscape.

For sneaker enthusiasts, the gallery houses a collection of rare sneakers, showcasing how hip-hop style has significantly influenced sneaker culture and its relevance in the fashion world.
