Zatanna Zatara Makes First Appearance in Issue 4 of the Hawkman Comic Book
First Appearances | Oct 10, 1964
Zatanna Zatara, better known simply as Zatanna, is a powerful magician who uses her abilities as a hero with the Justice League of America and the Justice League Dark. She can command magical energy, cast spells by speaking commands backwards, is an expert in the occult and demonology, and she’s a good fighter.
Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson first introduced Zatara in Hawkman #4, which was published on October 10, 1964. She is the daughter of magician Giovanni “John” Zatara and Sindella, who belongs to a subset of humans known as the homo magi race, that have natural magical abilities. Zatanna was working as a regular stage magician when she discovered her magical abilities while trying to find her missing father. Her search for Zatara connected her to other DC superheroes such as Hawkman and Hawkgirl. She later teams up with the Atom, Green Lantern, and Elongated Man. At one point the Outsider took control of her and disguised her as a witch to attack Batman and Robin.
Zatanna has appeared in several media adaptations, including several television series in the DC Animated Universe, notably voiced by Julie Brown and Jennifer Hale. She has also appeared as a recurring character in the final three seasons of the TV series Smallville, portrayed by actress Serinda Swan. Additionally, a younger version of the character appears in Young Justice and Justice League Action, voiced by Lacey Chabert, and in DC Super Hero Girls, voiced by Kari Wahlgren.
