Sci-Fi Horror Alien: Romulus Becomes First Major Studio Film to get VHS Release in 18 Years
Milestones, VHS Releases | Dec 3, 2024
Alien: Romulus gets released as a limited edition VHS cassette on December 3, 2024. The nostalgic VHS release celebrates the 45th anniversary of the Alien media franchise, which began with Ridley Scott’s now iconic space horror Alien.
The limited edition VHS features a classic 4×3 aspect ratio, typical with the format, along with box art by movie poster artist Matt Ferguson.
Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez announced the release by way of video on October 19, 2024 during a Beyond Fest Film Festival double-feature featuring the original Alien and Alien: Romulus. The screening event took place at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, California, presented by Beyond Fest and the American Cinematheque, where Álvarez gave a video introduction. During his opening words, Álvarez said that a major film studio last released a VHS edition in 2006 when David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence was distributed on the legacy format.
In addition to the VHS edition, a Steelbook 4K & Blu-ray set, and DVD are also released on the same date. Those released include exclusive features like featurettes with filmmakers Fede Alvarez and Ridley Scott, behind the scenes content, along with alternate and extended scenes.
Prior to the physical media releases, Alien: Romulus was made available digitally for rent and purchase on streaming platforms including Prime Video and AppleTV+.
Alien: Romulus centers on a group of young colonizers that come face-to-face with the deadliest life form in the universe, while scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station. Directed by Fede Álvarez, Alien: Romulus stars Isabela Merced, Cailee Spaeny, Archie Renaux and David Jonsson.
