Pioneering Music TV Series TopPop Premieres in The Netherlands

TopPop was the first regularly aired pop music television show to air in The Netherlands. Dutch broadcaster AVRO aired the program weekly from 1970 until 1988. Presenter Ad Visser hosted the show for TopPop’s first fifteen years and Penney de Jager was one of the lead dancers on the show. World famous musicians performed on TopPop, including ABBA, 10CC, Dr. Hook, Bee Gees, The Jackson 5, David Bowie, Earth, Wind & Fire, Boney M, Queen, Golden Earring, KC & The Sunshine Band, Chic and many more.
As of 2024, AVROTROS, a Dutch radio and television broadcaster founded in 2014 from a merger of AVRO and TROS, owns the rights to the series. From January 1st, 2014 the name of the merged broadcaster was used in joint programs. AVRO was founded in 1923 as the Netherlands first public broadcaster. TROS began broadcasting in 1964.
