CJ 4DPLEX and Regal Cinemas opened ScreenX locations in New York City and San Francisco on Thursday, September 6, 2018. The launches mark the first theaters in each city to feature ScreenX, the panoramic, 270-degree cinema environment that projects films on three walls of the auditorium. The milestone ScreenX installations are located at Regal Cinemas Union Square in New York City and Regal Hacienda Crossings near San Francisco. Both theaters were part of a previously announced expansion plan with the Cineworld Group and its subsidiaries, which include Regal, to bring 100 ScreenX screens locations to the U.S. and Europe.
The opening feature for the locations is The Nun, a horror film set in The Conjuring universe that centers on a priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows. The pair are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.
Directed by Corin Hardy, The Nun stars Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Bonnie Aarons, Ingrid Bisu, Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor, Charlotte Hope, Sandra Teles, Maria Obretin, August Maturo, Jack Falk and Lynnette Gaza.
ScreenX is a panoramic film format that presents movies with expanded, dual-sided, 270-degree screens projected on the walls in a theater. First introduced in 2012, it is Co-developed by CJ 4DPLEX, a subsidiary of the CJ CGV group, and KAIST. The firms also created the 4DX motion-theater technology, known as Ultra 4DX.
