Ghostbusters Day is an annual celebration of the iconic 1984 comedy film Ghostbusters. The Day began informally in 2014 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the movie’s release. Since then, it has grown into a beloved tradition that brings together fans from around the world.

The first official celebration of Ghostbusters Day took place on June 8, 2016. The date marked the 32nd anniversary of the original film’s release. Sony Pictures and Ghost Corps organized an event featuring a reunion of the original cast, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts, along with the cast of the 2016 reboot – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. The group made an appearance on the late nite television series Jimmy Kimmel Live. Additionally, the original Ghostbusters film was screened in more than 800 movie theaters across the United States on that date, with encore screenings on June 12, 2016.

Additionally, a Ghostbusters Day fan celebration has taken place at Hook and Ladder 8 in Downtown New York City, since 2020. The first of such events took place on June 6, 2020, just ahead of the 36th Anniversary of the film’s release.

Directed by Ivan Reitman, Ghostbusters was originally released on June 8, 1984, one day after it’s World Premiere in Westwood, California in June 7th. The supernatural fantasy comedy was co-written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Ghostbusters also stars Aykroyd as Dr. Raymond Stantz and Ramis as Dr. Egon Spengler, along with Bill Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman, Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett, Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddmore, Rick Moranis as Louis Tully, Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz, William Atherton as Walter Peck, Slavitza Jovan as Gozer, Jordan Charney as Dean Yeager, David Margulies, Steven Tash, Jennifer Runyon, Michael Ensign and Alice Drummond.

Ghostbusters centers on three parapsychologists that have been forced out of their university funding. The trio recruit a fourth member and set up shop as a unique ghost removal service in New York City, attracting frightened yet skeptical customers.
