Black Moon Rising is a 1986 American science fiction action film directed by Harley Cokeliss, written by John Carpenter, and starring Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Hamilton, Robert Vaughn, Keenan Wynn, Bubba Smith, Nick Cassavetes and Richard Jaeckel. The film centers on the theft of a prototype race car called the Black Moon.
In the movie, a thief named Sam Quint (Tommy Lee Jones) is hired by the Justice Department to steal incriminating tapes from a corrupt corporation. The tapes are evidence in an ongoing court case against the company. During Quint’s narrow escape from the company’s headquarters, he hides the stolen tapes in the back of a hydrodynamic-powered race car that itself is soon stolen by an organized car theft ring lead by a man named Ryland (Robert Vaughn). The ensuing events involve a sexy car thief played by Linda Hamilton and a hard-nosed FBI agent played by NFL football player-turned-actor Bubba Smith.
