On December 11, 2026, the Jim Fields and Michael Gramaglia documentary End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones receives a 4K restored theatrical re-release. The series comes more than 20 years after the film originally premiered during the Slamdance Film Festival at the Treasure Mountain Inn in January 2003. It also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the legendary punk band’s debut album, the 1976 titular “Ramones,” which was originally released on April 23, 1976, by Sire Records. The milestone re-release, which is distributed by Magnolia Pictures, also marks the first time ever that the documentary is made available digitally.
The 4K restoration of End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones is a vibrant and candid portrait of one of the most influential bands in punk rock history. The begins in 1974, when the New York City music scene was shocked into consciousness by the violently new and raw sound of a band of misfits from Queens called The Ramones. Playing in a seedy Bowery bar to a small group of fellow struggling musicians, the band struck a chord of disharmony that rocked the foundation of the mid-seventies music scene. The quartet of unlikely rockers traveled across the U.S. and around the world connecting with the disenfranchised everywhere, sparking a movement that resonated with two generations of outcasts across the globe. Although the band never reached the top of the Billboard charts, they managed to endure by maintaining a rigorous touring schedule for twenty-two years. The documentary features all four founding members – Tommy Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, Joey Ramone and Johnny Ramone – as well as an appearances by iconic music producer Rick Rubin, who also helped shepherd the career of legendary hip-hop super-group Run-DMC, Punk Magazine co-founders Legs McNeil & John Holmstrom, CBGB’s owner Hilly Kristal, Blonde members Debbie Harry, Chris Stein & Clem Burke, along with other music industry icons.
