Michael Mann’s genre-defining serial killer thriller returns to movie theaters for its 40th anniversary by way of a stunning restoration overseen by Mann himself. Manhunter centers on a retired criminal profiler (played by William Petersen) who reluctantly returns to the FBI in order to assist with the apprehension of a serial murderer. To get much-needed clues to the killer’s identity, he’s forced to consult an “expert” — the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox in a subtly chilling performance).

Manhunter was adapted from the first Thomas Harris Lecktor novel, and includes a supporting cast consisting of Tom Noonan as serial killer Francis Dollarhyde and three-time Oscar nominee Joan Allen, along with Dennis Farina, Stephen Lang, Michael Talbott and Benjamin Hendrickson.
