Mr. T Cereal Becomes Quaker's First Licensed Ready-to-eat Cereal

Milestones, Themed Memorabilia and Food | Jun 30, 1984

Quaker’s Mr. T Cereal, a brand which benefited from 80’s pop culture icon Mr. T’s kid-friendly, unmistakable persona, was released in conjunction with his popular animated television series Mister T. Quaker released the T-shaped cereal a few months prior to the premiere of season 2 of the show, with a taste very similar to Cap’n Crunch. The sweetened corn and oat cereal was fortified with iron and B vitamins, and, as with most breakfast cereals of the era, also had generous amounts of sugar in every box.

Mr. T Cereal capitalized on Mr. T’s popularity on the TV series The A-Team and his appearance in Rocky III. Advertising with catchphrases like “Team up with Mr., It’s cool” and “I pity the fool who don’t eat my cereal” sealed the deal for kids – along with the young at heart. That is, at least up until 1993, when the brand was retired.

The cereal made a a memorable appearance in the 1985 film, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure in a scene where the character Pee Wee Herman poured cereal over pancakes and eggs while impersonating Mr. T’s signature line “I pity the fool.”

The cereal box prize consisted of a packet of Mr. T. stickers, which were packaged inside the boxes. The cereal was the first licensed ready-to-eat cereal manufactured and marketed by the Quaker Oats Company.
