Hot Pursuit centers on a young fugitive couple being pursued by both law enforcement and an assassin. James Wyler (Eric Pierpoint) and his wife Kate (Kerrie Keane) begin as an upper-middle class couple in Kentucky before the events in the show begin. Kate is a successful automotive engineer and Jim is a veterinarian. Then Kate is framed for murdering her boss, Victor Modrian (Bradford Dillman) and sentenced to prison.
In reality, Modrian’s wife Estelle (Dina Merrill) orchestrated her husband’s murder using a lookalike for Kate. Estelle was angry at her husband for supporting research and development on a vehicle prototype that she feared would bankrupt their company. Estelle also falsely suspected Victor of having an affair with Kate. James Wyler discovers the homeless lookalike and determines to bring Estelle to justice and soon after helps Kate escape from prison.
The couple go on the run, tracking clues to the real culprits, while taking on odd jobs to finance their search. Estelle discovers that Jim and Kate are on the run and hires a one-eyed assassin named Alec Shaw to hunt down and murder Kate’s lookalike, along with Jim and Kate.
