The Picture was a weekly Australian men’s magazine that was launched in 1988. It has been described as softcore pornography and was classified with a Mature (M) rating. The magazine was based in Sydney and was published weekly. The Picture had a circulation of about 31,000 in 2012. The magazine was launched by publisher Australian Consolidated Press (ACP) and was taken over by Bauer Media Group in 2013 until its last issue on December 23, 2019.
Bauer cited declining sales as the reason for the magazine’s closure, along with the news that both 7-Eleven and BP announcing that they would no longer carry the magazine due to its sexualized content.
Notable journalists that worked on The Picture include Jack Marx and Paul Toohey, both Walkley Award winners. Other famous names to have worked at The Picture include Tubs Grogan, Bob Gelding, former Rugby League Week writer Brad Boxall, Dave Lornie and legend from the tropics, Alf Wilson. During the mid-1990’s, former Australian fast bowler Jeff Thomson wrote a gardening column for the magazine, which covered all topics besides gardening. Cartoons over the years included Coogan, Dr Cheeseman, Ballz ‘N’ All and Pig Dog.
